Take It Or Leave It

Fewer days of annual leave = higher productivity.

Doesn't seem to be quite a sound theory, even to a simple layman like me.

But that seems to be the idea behind the decision by the PSD to slash the number of annual leave of civil servants from the current 30 days to 25 though they are given options either to stick to their current entitlement of 30 days or sacrifice the five days. Newly recruited officers are automatically given 25 days.

A head-spinning decision. Funny still, a deadline of December 31st is given to those who are thinking about opting to let go the five days.

There will be lots of intepretation on this after news about its implementation come January 1st 2009 was published in the local media yesterday and today. But it is still an awkward decison to me.

I do wonder by slashing the annual leave will guarantee higher productivity! No to sound demeaning but really. Should look at it from a different perspective. Back when I was in the corporate services, productivity is ensured by constant monitoring and upgrading / changes of policy(ies) should it is required with the current situation. It was not such a hassle as claimed.

It says if we opt for the cut, we'll be compensated by a new implementation scheme. But it didnt say clearly what or how. Talk about being vague. Shows that no one really thought it through, or even thought to ask the majority.

Vague or disoriented ? how does cutting back the annual leave will guarantee a more productive civil service? Using what formula ? Look at what happened when Saturday was no longer a half working day? Was it not to reduce...expenditures? Yet we are incurring a higher expenditure because we have to pay more on overtime!!!!....

ya, it was quite a surprise when i heard about the news earlier on that the annual leave for the civil service will be cut to 25 days from 30 to increase productivity. so what? for some of us, we have been working on weeekends, night time and on public holidays years after years without asking for any sort of compensation and we r not eligible for overtime claim too. i for one didnt make any fuss out of it as it is part of my duty to do so and so are some of u. so it is hightime that heads of departments identify those who don't perform and give them the boot!
